Abstract

This study investigates the translation errors found in AI-generated translations of the meanings of the Holy Qur'an, focusing on the fifth Juzʾ (Part Five). It aims to evaluate the accuracy of artificial intelligence in translating Qur'anic texts and to identify the errors that may arise when AI-based translation systems operate without the supervision of experts in Islamic law (Shariah) and Arabic linguistics.

The study seeks to answer the following central research question: Can artificial intelligence systems effectively contribute to identifying and correcting translation errors in non-Arabic translations of the meanings of the Holy Qur'an? To achieve this objective, the identified translation errors were analyzed according to four major criteria: grammatical errors, semantic errors, errors in conveying legal and Shariah-related terminology, and errors in handling verbal similarities and linguistic nuances.

The findings reveal that AI systems demonstrate remarkable efficiency in detecting translation errors due to their ultra-fast processing speed, their ability to analyze large volumes of text, and their consistency in identifying recurring errors across multiple Qur'anic verses. However, the study also highlights several significant limitations. AI systems struggle to identify deep contextual errors that require purposive interpretation, show limited ability to recognize issues related to the rhetorical inimitability (Iʿjāz) and metaphorical expressions of the Qur'an, and are unable to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable translation choices in cases where legitimate differences of Qur'anic interpretation exist.

The study concludes that artificial intelligence can serve as a valuable assistive tool for identifying surface-level translation errors and enhancing the efficiency of the translation review process. Nevertheless, it remains incapable of detecting subtle interpretative errors that require profound linguistic expertise, comprehensive knowledge of Qur'anic exegesis (Tafsir), and a deep understanding of the spiritual and theological dimensions of the Holy Qur'an. Consequently, AI should complement, rather than replace, qualified human scholars in the translation and evaluation of the meanings of the Holy Qur'an.
