Clarifying errors in the translation of the meanings of the Holy Quran using artificial intelligence, Part Nine
Abstract
This research provides an in-depth analysis of error patterns committed by generative artificial intelligence systems when translating the words of the Holy Qur'an, in light of comparative studies published during 2025-2026. The research proceeds from a fundamental premise: Qur'an translation is not merely a process of linguistic substitution, but rather an exegetical endeavor that considers the doctrinal, linguistic, rhetorical, and historical dimensions of the sacred text. The research classifies the main errors into four areas: First, the failure to comprehend the collocational and connotative meanings of Qur'anic terms (such as the word "Al-Qar'"); Second, the problem of lexical equivalence and the absence of precise counterparts in other languages (such as the term "Akh" in its doctrinal context); Third, the inability to handle polysemy and interpretive hallucination in verses requiring understanding of context and occasion of revelation; Fourth, the failure to convey rhetorical embellishments and miraculous eloquence (I'jāz), which constitute an integral part of the Qur'anic message. The research also discusses technical challenges specific to artificial intelligence, including reliance on erroneous or biased training data, cultural and interpretive bias that imposes a monolithic view of the text, and the fundamental lack of spirit, intentionality, and interpretive purpose that distinguishes human translators. The research concludes that the solution lies in adopting a "Human-in-the-loop" model based on strict religious and academic supervision, auditing learning sources to rely on authoritative exegeses, and establishing technical controls that respect the specificity and sanctity of the Qur'anic text.
